Do You Want To Know The Pluses And Minuses Of The Different Mulch Types

By Denver Teti

Mulch holds a neat and clean look, making it very pleasing to look at. This improves the picture of your garden. This is not the only benefit though that you get from the different mulch types. Mulch helps in:

? Prevent soil erosion, ? Retain moisture and control weeds, ? Add nutrients to the soil.

There are several options in choosing which mulch type to use. Let?s have a brief description of each type with its corresponding advantage and disadvantage.

? Wood chips are the most common type and it can be found in the center of the garden. It is simple to work with this type of mulch plus it also gives most of the advantages mentioned earlier. Unseasoned wood chips are preferred than recycled ones because the recycled give off acids and toxins that can be dangerous to new plants. It is best to use wood chips that have a minimum age of one year.

? Straw is another type of mulch. It can be found from the leftover stems after grain crops have been harvested. The best thing about straw is that it covers the ground well. Un-planted garden spaces and newly seeded lawns need mulching. Like the leaves, it also has the disadvantage of being blown easily. It also needs to be replaced often because it can decompose quickly. It is best to use it then in areas that don?t require protection for long time.

? Shredded newspaper is another great mulch. This type of mulch is best for vegetable gardens. It is advantageous because it is easy to find newspaper at home and the decomposition is also quick. But then, using newspaper would not look very attractive when it comes to landscaping. The ink color can also harm plants. Be sure to choose then those newspaper sections that are ink-colored. Also avoid the use of magazines due to the glossy paper.
