Understand the Ins and Outs of Teaching

By Cory Taylor

Despite popular opinion, teaching is actually one of the best professions in America. With the "No Child Left Behind?policies of our current administration, teachers are now in need more than ever before since schools are now graded by how well the students learn the core curriculum. Seeing as how teachers are in such demand (especially science and math teachers), they now are able to command high pay right when they are hired.

What used to be a job that only paid around twenty thousand a year now begins at nearly forty thousand (in California) and after a decade or so can easily reach up to almost eighty thousand dollars a year. That is an amazing salary for a person who works just over half of a year on a schedule that is far less than forty hours per week. So, if you are looking for a great job that has nice, short hours, no work requirement over the weekend and plenty of vacation around all of the major holidays, then teaching may be just the profession for you.

Of course, to become a teacher you will have to go through the regular trials and tribulations that all great jobs would require you to participate in. You will have to be college educated, pass a standardized test and eventually obtain your teaching credentials if you ever hope to make it as a teacher. These requirements are much more stringent in some states and more relaxed in others, so it really depends on where you live and where you plan to teach.

However, states that require you to jump through more hoops to get a teaching job will usually pay more in the long term, so you may want to consider that aspect of the teaching profession. In California, one of the most difficult states to become a teacher, you must take teaching courses if you want ascertain your teaching credential. Also, if you want a clear path to becoming a teacher in most states, you should certainly go for your teaching degree in college ?that way you will be all primed and ready for a teaching job as soon as you graduate. Alternatively, if you have majored in something else and decide that you want to be a teacher later, you can always take some teaching classes and get a teaching certificate that is good pretty much wherever you go to teach.

Once you have decided that you have what it takes to become a teacher, you must decide what and where you want to teach. As mentioned earlier, someone who is teaching English will not make as much money as someone teaching one of the sciences, so you if you want to make the big bucks you may want to get a science degree in college. When you start looking for a job, you will find that teaching positions are everywhere and you can even take a job teaching abroad if you want to see the world. Teaching opportunities are offered in pretty much every country around the world, so if you like to travel you may want to look into that.

After you finally settle down on a place and subject you want to teach, then you should head to your local educational shop and purchase all of the necessary teaching materials and teaching software that can help you educate your pupils. All in all, however, if you are looking for a highly rewarding job that will not only help you make a lot of money in the long term (and give you a great retirement package), but will also give you the opportunity to make a difference in many people's lives, then you may want to consider teaching as your career path.
