Tips for Choosing a Captain's Bed

By Lauren Greene

A captains bed is one of the most versatile and functional beds on the market today which has made it quite popular among adults and youth alike. Unlike the early versions of the captain's bed, today's bed is made in different styles, woods, finishes, sizes, storage features and decorator themes. Since there are so many types of captains beds, it's helpful to know how to choose the best bed for your particular needs. Here are some basic tips that can help you choose the right captain's bed.

The most important feature of this type of bed is, of course, the storage drawers that are built right in to the bed frame. However, not all storage features are equal, so be aware of the many optional storage designs from which to choose. You can find beds that are built with a mere 4 drawers on each side of a typical double bed or you can find maximum storage capacity in a huge king size bed that can offer as many as 14 drawers on all sides. Nevermind the fact that you can also add an additional storage headboad that provides even more storage space. Be sure to calculate how many drawers you prefer when you choose your bed design.

Secondly, take into consideration the size of bed that you will actually need. When choosing a captain's bed, it's best to think also of the needed storage space as well as the sleep space you prefer. For example, while a twin sleep space may be all you actually need to sleep on, it may be more cost effective and organizationally expedient to choose a double bed with a set of 6 or 12 drawers on all sides. The price is only a bit more, but you get a lot more bang for you buck if you choose more storage in your sleep space.

Third, check out the various home decor styles that are available. You no longer have to choose among the conventional nautical styles that were so popular in years past. There are now contemporary, colonial, cottage and mission styles available. It's really easy to find a style that blends in with your current home decor.

Lastly, carefully select your storage configuration design. Some beds have only two drawers on either side, while others may offer 3 drawers on all sides, for a total of six drawers. Other beds are built to stack 2 rows of drawers for a total of 12 drawers on all sides. The mattresses on these beds are higher than those built for one row of drawers. Before choosing your captain's bed, be sure to compare features, designs and quality to ensure a home accessory that meets your needs.
