Relaxing, Sharing Love, And Wearing Cool Christmas T-Shirts

By Nicholas Thatcher

I have been on a veritable tirade at my house this Fall about buying a dozen really cool Christmas t-shirts and giving them to our visiting relatives this year. My wife thinks I've gone crazy, but I'm standing by my decision based on the fact that I really think that our kin have forgotten what Christmas really means. The traditions can still exist without all off the stuffy shirts and constricting clothes.

I understand that there are religious connotations to this holiday. It means a lot to both me and my entire family that we celebrate that, and we are proud to go to church and recognize Christ's birth. Does that mean that we can't also enjoy some comfort when we're at home? There is not a single Bible verse that I've found that says anything about wearing a tie to Christmas dinner and to never wear cool Christmas t-shirts if you wish to respect God.

While I'm not worried at all about the earnest connection we feel to God, I do have doubts about the earnest connection we have with one another. We used to be completely involved with one another's lives, but now we've drifted apart. It seems that Christmas is the only time we really ever truly come together anymore, and I don't want that visit to be formal and stuffy. I want to give my love and thanks to them and receive it in turn. If I could just get them out of those suit coats and dresses and into some cool Christmas t-shirts, I think I could break through that chilly exterior.

I love my family dearly, and if I can bring a little of that love back into the Christmas season by giving cool Christmas t-shirts to everyone, then that's what I'm going to do. We used to be so close that my uncle would actually call me every week, just to chat and to see how the kids were doing. Now it seems that we have to schedule a meeting just so we can acknowledge each other's existence.

There's room for tradition and love during Christmas. I think that somewhere along the line, we all forgot that just a little bit. I don't want to skip decorating the tree or putting up the lights. We can put on our fancy clothes and attend church. When we get home, though, it's time to put on my stretchy pants and my cool Christmas t-shirts. We can have the nicest goose in the world, but I want to be comfortable when I'm sitting in my chair and sharing my Christmas with the people I care for the most in this world.
