Firefighters Live in a Firehouse?

By Dave Lashier

Fire fighters are one of the most important parts of our community. Not only do they put out fires, they respond with quickness to any emergency or disaster in their area. They protect the citizens of our community in exchange for little compensation. They are heroes. Within the fire house is supplied everything that may be needed for firefighters to relax and rest between emergencies. Whether they are eating, sleeping, or playing basketball, firefighters are on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Of course the first thing that in noticed by most people when they walk into a firehouse is the traditional fireman's pole. While not all firehouse have these anymore, they are still an efficient way to get down a level or two in a building quickly. Another thing associated with firefighters is that big red tuck with ladders and hoses.

The eye-catching color of the truck is crucial and making sure that it is seen by all motorists and pedestrians as it moves speedily to its destination. The fire truck is equipped with important gadgets and supplies for emergencies, including water hose, ladders and ropes, smoke masks, chemicals for fires, and first aid supplies. These all help in efficiently responding to any sort of emergency.

A firehouse also features living quarters for the firefighters. These quarters are not elegant like hotel rooms, but these areas have the basic supplies and appliances firefighters need for the long shift ahead of them. The shifts can go for 24 hours, or more, so having the right supplies within reach is important. Being able to dine and talk together in the firehouse also bonds the firefighters as a family, which is helpful since they all risk their lives side by side during work.

Because the firefighters have saved so many lives and properties, they can truly be thought of as heroes. For them, the firehouse serves as a second home and houses their basic needs. While a firehouse is not as fully equipped as a hotel, the fact that it provides quick relaxation and rest to firefighters is enough. While the application process for firefighting is long and hard, people who succeed won't regret their decision. Firefighting is a rewarding job that contributes a lot to society.
