Easily Total Household Control With Affordable Home Automation

By Shane Smith

Cartoon fans will remember with nostalgic envy the robot technology that fed, watered and completely eliminated the drudgery in the Jetson household. Theater goers still shudder with fear when they think back to Proteus, the artificial intelligence system that developed into the mother of all control freaks with chilling consequences. Today, home automation allows residents the ability to centrally control temperature, lighting, security, entertainment and other systems throughout the house.

It might seem that such a sophisticated piece of technology would be a drain on power. Not so. The system can be programmed to produce regular reports on the energy consumption of every energy-consuming device in the household. This allows the home owner to target the energy-intensive 'hot spots' and adjust consumption in such a way that they actually save money on fuel bills. Additionally, heating, security, lighting, etc., can be controlled remotely to adjust for changes in occupancy, for example, if someone is going to be late home from work.

When the residents are going to be away for any length of time, for instance, on a vacation, all household systems can be preprogrammed to run in their absence. Not only does manipulating the lighting and sound systems at different times of the day give potential intruders the impression that there are people indoors, irrigation systems can be programmed to make sure that the lawn and gardens are adequately watered.

Household maintenance systems can also be used to perform routine tasks while the household is occupied, thus keeping the residents free from tedium. Burglar alarms can be preprogrammed and adjusted remotely. The hot water controls can be set to take advantage of cheaper overnight charge bands.

Another aspect of living that can be automated is entertainment. Relax in front of the large-screen television and enjoy Monday Night Football as if you were on the fifty yard line. Program the stereo to play bouncy, stimulating tunes in the morning and then soul-soothing music before bed time in the evening.

Home automation is surprisingly easy to afford. It is fun, friendly to the environment and can actually help save money and make life easier.
