How To Get Started With Flight School

By Morton Meintjes

Many people dream about flying, and while it can appear to be a difficult dream to achieve, the truth is quite the opposite. All one really needs to do is decide what they want to fly and in what capacity. Flight school is available for helicopters and airplanes, and licenses can be obtained for personal or for commercial use. Price is determined largely by the level of skill obtained, so financing is rarely an issue for those truly interested in becoming certified.

While it might appear strange, there are no prerequisites for being accepted into training. High school and college degrees are not needed so long as one has the true desire to fly. While there are medical requirements that are determined by the type of license obtained, there are no other restrictions. If one has the desire and medical clearance the opportunity is there.

Finding a training location is the first step in the process. Flight education is available most anywhere, and in fact in many locations there are several options. If this is the case, it is a good idea to visit each location and tour the facilities. Talk to the people there and get a good feel for the process.

Next, consider taking what many refer to as a discovery flight. Some schools offer these for free and others charge a small fee. Either way, it's a great way to get the feel for what it's like to take off, navigate, and land. Getting in the air early on will likely increase the resolve to do what it takes to become certified.

Remember too that the right instructor makes all the difference. If there are options, take the time to get to know each one before deciding. A good relationship with the teacher can be the difference between successfully completing the training and failing.

While learning to fly is not a terribly expensive thing to do, money should be a consideration. Students will be paying for their ground school material, but they will also be funding their instructor's time as well as the aircraft rental along with the fuel required to fly it. Financing is almost always available, however many people choose to pay as they go. Either way it is wise to develop a training budget.

Certainly there are many things to consider when it comes to flight school, from how to finance it to what to fly. Choosing the right school and instructor can be the difference between success and failure. Take the time to explore all the available options and then get started. Whether for business or for pleasure, nothing matches the enjoyment of flying, and anyone who is willing can learn.
