Heart Monitor Watches - Get The Right One For You

By Chris Station

If you someone who works at getting and staying fit, then you probably already know just how useful heart rate monitors can be. So once you make the decision to use a heart monitor watch to help improve the quality of your workouts, the next step is finding the right one. With so many different heart monitor watches available today, here are a few tips to help you get the right one.

A heart monitor watch has many levels of functionality. You can get one that tracks basic information like your heart rate to more advanced monitors that are almost like wearing a mini computer on your wrist. Heart rate monitors are made for all different types of sports, for elite athletes or weekend warriors, and for both men and women.

To help you figure out which monitor to choose, think about what you're going to use it for. Next decide what you are going to measure and track. And think about what your long term fitness goals are.

Not all heart monitors work for every sport. When you're deciding on features think about the goals you will aim to achieve in six months or a year.

Certainly you don't want to spend money on features you aren't sure you'll ever use. But you also don't want to leave out a feature that you may use later on when your fitness has moved up a notch.

If you are a runner, the selection of watches is huge. For cyclists, swimmers, or triathletes there are far fewer monitors designed specifically for these sports. Once you know what specific sport or activity you'll be primarily engaged in, you can then start to eliminate at least some monitors.

Now you are ready to decide on the features you think you'll make use of in a monitor.

Are you interested in keeping track of your workout sessions from day to day and then downloading them to your laptop so you can compare your results? Or do you only really need to see your daily performance on the heart monitor screen?

Are you only looking to access basic information like heart rate, distance and speed? Or do you prefer to get detailed stats and data about your workouts, as well as customized recommendations that have been tailored for you to use in future workouts?

Decide where you'll be training. If you mainly train at an indoor facility using weights or machines, you'll probably use different features than if you training outdoors. There you will face a variety of conditions and you'll be on different terrains.

Are such navigation features as an altimeter, a compass or GPS important?

The cost of heart monitor watches varies a lot and is dependent on what you want. For fitness buffs, monitors are as important as other fitness gear. Be sure to consider all options before you buy. That way you'll be sure to get the right heart monitor watch complete with every feature you want.
