The Art Of Furniture Restoration - What is Involved

By Brent Hollenberg

In the art of furniture restoration, there are many process involved. First, you should clean your furniture thoroughly. To clean properly, use a clean and damp cloth. If you encounter greasy or oily areas, clean these surfaces with soap solution. Also, you may remove screws and other hardware stuff but make sure to keep them because you'll be using them later on.

One of the very important parts of restoring furniture is sanding. Sanding furniture may be wet or dry. Wet sanding is better because it creates a smoother finish. Aside from that, wet sanding ensures that you remove only the old paint and primer surfaces and not go all the way to the wood. Do consider using a fine grit sand paper - a 26 grit is recommended.

Another process that is important is priming. A primer will ensure the best painting job for your furniture. You should use a water based primer for water based paint and an oil based primer for oil based paint. Never leave a primed area unpainted.

Another important process is painting your furniture. There are two (2) types of paint for furniture and these are oil based paint and water based paint.

I personally would opt for the water based type. Water based doesn't stink like oil based. Plus, water based dries quicker - around 6 hours (oil based takes 24 hours!). What's more, oil based paint is not reliable for outdoor furniture. Water based paint, on the other hand, is good for both outdoor and indoor furniture. Water based paint won't easily fade even after long exposure to the sun. Additional tip is to paint from top to bottom.
