The Top Three Charlotte Bobcats Team of All Time

By Jack Jones

When the Charlotte Hornets moved to New Orleans in 2002, the NBA guaranteed Charlotte that the town would be granted an NBA expansion team for the 2004-05 season. The NBA held up their end of the deal, and the Charlotte Bobcats were introduced to the league.

The 1st team owner for the Bobcats was Robert L. Johnson, who went out and employed Bernie Bickerstaff to become the clubs first head coach and general manager. The team's opening year featured the likes of Jason Kapono, Gerald Wallace, Primoz Brezec and rookie center Emeka Okafor. As many of you know, it is very tough for expansion teams to win right away. The Bobcats would win just 18 games in their first season, and were a public favorite to go against for those who bet on the NBA. Okafor did give the team reason to get excited about the future as he won the NBA Rookie of the Year.

In the 2005 season, the Bobcats drafted point guard Raymond Felton and Sean May in what the team was hoping would be an a big step in turning this team into a contender. They would finish their second season with a 24-58 record, improving their overall record by eight games. In their third season, the team didn't play all that well at first until minority owner Michael Jordan informed the organization that head coach Bernie Bickerstaff would not be coming back at the end of the year. The Bobcats went out with a bang as they finished 11-8 on the way to a 33-49 record.

The team signed Sam Vincent as the team's 2nd coach, with the expectation the team would be well placed to make the playoffs. The team disappointed though as Vincent seemed to clash with his players. As a consequence, Charlotte finished with a 32-50 record. He was consequently fired after only one year and replaced by Larry Brown. Under Brown's tutelage the team made the playoffs for the 1st time in franchise history in the 2009-10 season. They finished the season with a 44-38 record before being swept by the Orlando Magic in the first round.

The subsequent year, the team made a interesting move by trading away Gerald Wallace for picks and role players while also sending veteran center Nazr Mohammed to the Oklahoma Town Thunder for Morris Peterson and D.J. White. The team didn't fare miles better as they finished the season with a 34-48 record.

The best team in Charlotte's really short history has to go to the 2009-10 team.Although they were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Orlando Magic, the incontrovertible fact that they're the only team to end with a winning record and the sole team to make the postseason, without question has them ranked as the best team in franchise history.
