Not Enough Hot Water or Water Not Hot Enough

Not getting enough out of your heater is a usually issue with defective units. You may not get sufficient amount when you bathe or the heating unit may not be producing a supply that is warm enough. This could be the result of a small tank or a problem with the distance from the tank to the shower. Another reason could that you bought a heating system that was already defective.

The first two (size of tank and distance from tank to shower/appliance) should be noticeable from the beginning, and you will either have to set the temperature of the water heater to a hotter temperature, or get a bigger water heater to solve the issue. You can also try insulating the tank and the pipes better, so that the water stays hotter longer.

If the heater was working fine in the beginning but falters later on, then this could mean that the appliance has started to malfunction. This would usually involve the dip tube, a plastic partition in the heating tank that separates cold water at the bottom and warm at the top. If the dip tube cracks or leaks, this prevents the separation of preheated from cold H2O supply, producing only slightly warmer temperature. The supply will not heat up to an ideal temperature and you will need to hire professional plumbers to fix this unless you have been trained to do so or have an HVAC certification.

Leaks In The Heater unit

Leakage in your heating system can cause temperature changes in your shower. You could be losing precious supply leaking out of your heating appliance. If you find a large or small pool of water below your heater or water tank, it might be leaking or dripping. There could be various sources of the leak. You will have to locate the source of the leak which could be loose or broken parts.

To look for the problem, you will have to inspect the valves like the drainage, temperature and pressure valves. Check the heating gaskets, outgoing and incoming pipes. Usually, all you would have to do is to tighten the valves and gaskets. Other times, this will not be enough and you will need to get professional help to fix it. If the connections are corroded or rusty, you will have to get the parts replaced.
