The Benefits Of Becoming An LPN Offer Immediate Income

By Gina DeCampo

Choosing to get educated in the profession of an LPN or Licensed Practical Nurse is a timely decision. The benefits of becoming an LPN first rather than going directly into an RN program are definitely available but it is up to the individual to decide if the LPN route is suitable for them. There is always a demand for individuals trained in this profession and the job outlook according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics looks very good.

There is a group of people who feel getting out into the work force and building professional skills should come early in their career. This is why many choose to become certified LPNs first since the program lasts only one year. They elect to return to the classroom later on to get qualified as an RN. Often the will stay at their place of employment.

The LPN training serves as a stepping stone to the next position. The experience that the LPN gathers while nursing as an LPN will prove invaluable when they return to school for their RN degree. Some people would rather save the time and money and go right into the RN program but there are positive aspects to the LPN route also.

Critical thinking and organizational skills come from on site experience and not from the classroom. The LPN learns to deal with different medical situations such as life and death scenarios. They reach a level of professional maturity that cannot be taught in RN schools. Many claim that the transitioning from one position to the next is easier.

The prospective LPN must have a high school diploma and one year of LPN training from an accredited course. They can continue working in their present position while they transition to RN by taking online courses. The courses are much cheaper than if they were taking classes on a campus. It will however, require discipline since fatigue can easily slow down their educational progress.

The Baby Boomer demographic is aging and will need medical care. The demand for RNs and LPNs will only increase. Wages too will go up and some LPNs rationalize that they will keep that profession since it is less stressful. RNs are ultimately held responsible for whatever happens on the ward during their shift. This means they are often subject to criticism by doctors, especially if unfortunate incidents like suicide occur.

RN instructors are difficult to recruit since their salaries are lower than if they worked in a medical facility as a practicing RN. Many RN candidates are turned away because there is no one to teach them. The benefits of becoming an LPN include immediate access to instruction and employment. At a later date the RN studies can be completed on the internet.
