I've made a couple of different things in it and all of them took less time than I thought they would. This is my first dehydrator, and I find it simple to use. This is the second Nesco Dehydrator I have purchased. The first lasted over 27 years and prepared more than 1000 pounds of jerky and fruits! Sure enough, it's 5 degrees hotter than what it's labeled. I love this dehydrator. I would buy again. I bought this to replace my Ronco model FD1005WHGEN 5-Tray Electric Food Dehydrator. It sadly got washed away in a flood. For all of you who want a timer: Go to the hardware store and buy an outlet timer.
I totally satisfied for what I bought. Great product! This is a 700 Watt unit but remember that appliances controlled by thermostat don't run at peak power the whole time. I tested mine for 4 hours at 160 degrees and it used 1.68 kWh or an average consumption of 420 Watts per hour.
You will figure out the perfect time quickly though. Even when drying salmon the fish smell is almost non-existent and the humming noise is not disturbing. If it only had a timer, it would be ideal. I bought the Nesco FD-75PR food dehydrator to replace my old dehydrator (which is no fan and very low). I usually have to remove the jerky just before 3 and a half hours. And this is with all 5 trays completely jam-packed, covered in beef. I use it 2-3 times a week. All I make is beef jerky. I purchased a dehydrator to make healthy treats for my dogs. This Nesco was chosen based on other reviews.
The Brinks makes using the Nesco a set and forget appliance. Nesco is very well made, and I cannot add any further comments to those already posted. I returned it to Amazon and I spent a lot more time reading the reviews, and it turns out that this Nesco is one of the highest-rated on the site. It is much sturdier than the cheap crap I bought before, and dries very efficiently.
I wasn't going to buy this one because of the price, but you really get what you pay for and this is worth the money. It does make a little noise but not bad.
