What Aviation Academy Graduates Can Expect

By Paul Waverly

Pilots have specialized and extensive training in how to operate large, complex aircraft. In order to get this training, they must either go through flight training with an organization such as the military, or go to an aviation academy, program. Sometimes, these programs are combined with academic ones in order to grant a degree.

The job of being a pilot itself does not require a college degree, but the field is competitive enough that a future pilot's prospects are considerably better if he or she has one. Engineering, English, math, and other degrees are popular.

Private pilot's licenses generally limit the person from being paid for their services, but commercial pilot training and certification allows people to be employed as pilots in a variety of fields. In order to take this certification exam, the pilot must have 250 hours of flight experience and training, pass a comprehensive medical exam, and be at least 18. Flying by instruments is a separate, additional certification required by those who will fly in bad weather.

The transportation of both human and non-human cargo is the main focus of companies that hire pilots. These airlines account for the employment of some 70% of the commercial pilots in the US. However, the remaining 30% work in other fields such as search and rescue or crop-dusting.

Commercial pilots as a whole make a median income of around $65,000 a year. However, those working in competitive jobs for major airlines make nearly twice as much - about $111,000 a year on average. The amount of hours spent flying to earn these wages vary drastically, given that layovers, weather delays, and other issues affect how many of the hours that a pilot is being paid for which he or she actually spends in the air.

Completing an aviation academy program lets people get their foot in the door with airlines and other employers. But these positions can be competitive, and even finishing a program at one of the 600-plus FAA-approved schools does not guarantee a great job. Getting college credit for flight training and completing a degree can help open doors, however.
