Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony: Could you Win These?

By Fred Myeruaw

Winning these 4 awards - the most prestigious in show sector - is oftentimes labelled as "the Grand Slam of entertainment." The achievement (as well as the particular person whom achieves it) also can be referred to as EGOT (or occasionally by another acronym, GATE, which stands for Grammy, Academy, Tony, Emmy). An EGOT is regarded as a celebrity who has acquired fame by generating work of substance and reputation (or at least recognition among peers, which each and every in the awards measures).

Only ten individuals in history have won all 4 awards. Five are actors (four of them women): John Gielgud (his Oscar was for his duty being the butler from the first film of Arthur, with Dudley Moore), Whoopi Goldberg, Helen Hayes (who won an Oscar for the disaster film Airport), Audrey Hepburn (from Breakfast at Tiffany's), and Rita Moreno (Anita in West Side Story). The other five EGOT/GATE winners contain 3 composers and two directors. On the list of directors, Mike Nichols (whose films incorporate Birdcage and the Graduate), certainly is the champ on the Grand Slam list, having a total of 14 awards across all 4 categories. The 1st to win all 4 was composer Richard Rodgers (whose credits contain The Sound of Music, The King and I, and South Pacific).

What do these men and women feature in common? Patterns may be tough to detect. Not all started on Broadway, to illustrate. Some did, but others came to the stage pretty late in their careers. Some, but not all, had formal education in their craft.

In several other methods, also, this is usually a diverse group with apparently extremely small in common except the truth that they're amongst the "group of 10" who've won all 4 honors.

But when you look more closely, you are able to see that these ten extremely distinctive people share two oh-so-obvious but oh-so-rare qualities: talent and dedication. Look in the body of work of each and every for these people. They had their share of duds (for instance, EGOT John Gielgud appeared within the X-rated Caligula created by Penthouse founder Bob Guccione), however they also had a track record of innovation...of taking chances...and of performing high-quality work even within the lower-quality pieces with which they had been involved. With regard to dedication, you are able to see in every EGOT's profession lots of task. None was an overnight wonder, plucked from obscurity and catapulted into stardom. Every actor auditioned...and didn't often win the role. Every composer worked and reworked their songs. Every director worked in other elements of the craft-onstage or backstage. Each and every of group of ten worked well hard...and often...and for years. (It took Rita Moreno 16 years to win all 4 awards...and she did it quicker than anybody else within the group of ten).

There are plenty of proficient individuals (60 in all) which have won 3 but not 4 awards. And you can find individuals that have won all 4 awards but not all in "competitive" categories (just like Barbra Streisand, who won a "special" Tony but not in a competitive category and is therefore technically not considered an EGOT). However the group of 10 hasn't had an addition from the time 2002.

Do you think you're a upcoming EGOT? Regardless of whether you commence as an actor or singer, dancer or director... Regardless of whether you commence on stage, on film, on record, or on TV... Do you possess the ability? The dedication? Think you're ready to audition? To take possibilities? To try...and try again...and retry...until you acquire the Grand Slam?
