Enjoying Outdoor Leisure And Recreation

By Bill McNeil

The answer to the title question is (almost) whatever one likes. So many things can be done outdoors it's almost impossible to list them all. Those who live near both water and mountains have the greatest range of outdoor pursuits available to them, but most folk can take part in a wide variety of outdoor leisure and recreation pursuits just by stepping out their own back doors. One can walk, run or cycle virtually anywhere in the world.

All the keep fit gurus and health trainers tell one to take more exercise to keep fit and ensure that one lives a long, healthy life. That's all very well, but sometimes one doesn't know where to go, or doesn't wish to spend time cooped up indoors, sweating on a treadmill. One doesn't need to either. Whatever the weather, one can take exercise out in the open air and more sociable surroundings.

Living by water opens up the opportunities for fishing, waterskiing, surfing, sailing, rowing, swimming and almost any other water sport one can name. Even digging sandcastles can be good fun. Hills and Mountains offer rock climbing and rock scrambling, hillwalking, mountaineering, and mountain biking, and the winter sports of tobogganing, skiing, and ice-skating. Of course skiing can be done all year round, if one lives near mountains with permanent snow cover, or an artificial slope.

Adapting local surroundings to one's needs make exercising outdoors much more fun that the same exercise performed indoors. Hundreds of western Australians have found this as they run up and down Jacob's Ladder, a steep flight of stairs in King's Park, Perth. In nearby Fremantle, gentler exercise is on the menu with early morning Tai chi classes on the green by the Round House.

Local parks offer many opportunities for running skate boarding and roller skating. Walking up the local hillside may well be wonderful if one wishes to fly a kite. The best bit is that most outdoor pursuits cost nothing apart from initial equipment ( a kite, a pair of sturdy walking boots etc). Clubs may charge a membership fee, but if all one wants is a kick-about or a little bird-watching, there is no charge.

Walking is an outdoor pursuit that virtually anyone can take part in. It also has the advantage of being free, except for some appropriate wet weather gear and a good pair of walking boots. It can be done anywhere, and even in the depths of winter there are beauties in the countryside, and even in the towns, to charm and delight.

It is essential that one has necessary equipment and obeys the safety rules when pursuing an activity outdoors. Check beforehand whether the activity one wishes to undertake is permissible. Some rivers and lakes cannot be fished without a permit, and some cannot be fished at all. One cannot normally camp on private ground without permission, and unless there are rights of way, one cannot even walk on private land, unless the landowner gives permission. Do not spoil one's enjoyment of outdoor leisure and recreation by poor planning.
