Fads Greatly Influence The Automobile Industry Too

Things appear and disappear, such as fads or trends, and this goes on in the automobile industry as much as anywhere else. During the last several years of the new millenium, there have been some interesting turns in the culture of cars. Way back in 2002, you would most certainly have been surprised at how fast the new designs could go, even plain, budget cars like the Nissan Altima.

The 240 horse power engine elevated the speeds considerably from what there was during the 90s. It didn't stop there either, because today the Volkswagen Passat, a family car, comes with 280 horsepower under the bonnet. Camaros are increasingly being left for dead by little Mitsubishis that cost $30,000. A Dodge Viper with its 500-horsepower is now just as ordinary a car. You possibly will not be a speed nut, but there are essentially no cars anymore that are really underpowered. Every single new vehicle model seems to be bigger than its predecessor. Once the new Toyota Rav4 premiered, it had grown by 14 inches, and if you take a look at Hondas, the current Civics are larger than the older model Accords. A car that is the same or less than before is not acceptable, it seems, if you have to pay more for it. If they're going to have to pay for it, they want their automobiles bigger and better. Sadly, much larger also means heavier, and automobile makers will continue to make what the consumer is willing to buy. American automobile buyers want to pay less overall for their gasoline, but they don't want to sacrifice speed to get it. They'd rather shell out more and wait for their hybrid car, the Prius from Toyota, which will allow them to keep going fast. And Corollas, offered off the very same dealer's showroom floor, are unsold. To compete, all car manufacturers are bringing hybrids to the marketplace, even those like Nissan Altima, which is using a system developed by Toyota, a competitor.

The dull appearance of the 90s has disappeared, as consumers want cars with personality. There's virtually no car nowadays that doesn't come equipped with power steering, power windows and locks, an impressive-sounding stereo and 6 airbags. Which happens to be probably why the new car you are thinking of getting goes for around $28,000 on average. We appear to be moving back to the day when a vehicle will be a car, just as the SUV is going the way of the foolish. It had been a fad that has perhaps run its course, as the bigger the SUV, the farther down the sales have dropped. Fantastic are the sales and profits of smaller cars, even the Neon and Sentra, while the Cheverolet Explorer and Expedition are receiving very few sales.

Automakers must move with the times and move away from the stereotype of big and fast. It continues to be seen what the long-term experiences of the hybrids will be. It's going to be fun to look back in several years time, and see all the outrageous fads that came and went.
