Looking At Tankless Water Heaters

By Kevin Salley

Among the most unpleasant sensations to take place in the bathroom, takes place in the shower. I am talking, of course, about that wonderful feeling of enjoying a nice warm shower on a cold evening, only to run out of hot water mid way through. You go from singing to screaming in a heartbeat. If you are fed up with having to rush to shut off the faucet every time that happens, or with being forced to stay in this freezing stream to finish rinsing out the shampoo, you have got an alternative.

There's an old joke that says there is no such thing as a hot water heater. It is either a cold water heater or a hot water cooler. Regardless, this oxymoron refers to heaters that are of the tank variety. A tank's capacity can range anywhere from 60 gallons to over 400. The stored H20 is then continually heated with electricity, natural gas, and oil, to name a few heating methods.

The problem occurs when the supply runs out and you get the icy cold shower. A tankless heater does not have this problem as it provides on demand heat.

Such a heater is put near where you would need it, like near a shower. Nothing is stored. Rather, H20 is heated instantly and sent to the destination, say the shower head.

Control board functions work together with the heater. So, when you turn the faucet on, the demand is sensed. Present H20 temp is compared to desired temp. Heating takes place and H20 is delivered via an exchange coil.

Traditional tanks are constantly heating. This means higher energy bills as it heats a lot when it really is not necessary. It may heat the same H20 several times before it gets used. With the tankless version, you will have a lowered bill. That is because it will only operate when it is necessary and thus save energy.
