Basics Steps In Shipping A Car

By Campbell Shahan

Shipping a car or vehicle is a very personal things to some people, like transporting a cherished family member. To others, it is just an object - simply a boat, car, RV, or motorcycle.

Although price is important, other important issues surface when the all important selection process of choosing a Carrier for auto transport is begun. First and foremost you must select based upon a comfort level that is good for you.

Licensing: Does this carrier have the proper licenses and permits? Insurance: Is he properly insured? Equipment: Using and maintaining a modern and safe truck and trailer is very important to the transportation process. Safety Record: His driving record does matter. Reputation: Does he project a professional attitude?

Your selection of Brokers that only use and utilize Carriers that meet a strict code of ethics and conduct is extremely important. Auto shipping is a serious business and only serious companies and individuals need to be involved.

Properly insured means having liability insurance as well as cargo insurance coverage, to not only cover your vehicle, but also any possible exposure to liability that may come along in the process of moving your vehicle. Most top companies today carry a minimum of $250,000.00 in cargo insurance and at least $1,000.000.00 in liability is standard.

Required and mandatory licensing is very important. Being licensed through the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) and having all of the state and federal permits (including registration with the DOT) is not only expected but necessary. The minimum required will be a Motor Carrier Authority Number (a license), a DOT number (licensing) and each state requires permits (expensive) just to utilize their highways for transport.

Getting your vehicle there safely is very urgent, so a safety record indicating that your driver is a careful profession is critically important to you as a shipper.

Reputations are built by all drivers/carriers. Some will be good while others not so good. A driver/carriers reputation will tell you a lot about what you can expect in terms of compliance with your contract, attitude, agreement, and the ability to just get along. You must choose carefully here and if you feel uncomfortable with a driver/carrier for any reason simply talk with another. Find one that makes you feel comfortable about the entire process. Review sites are available on the internet that can provide you with reviews of past performance of drivers/carriers and are complete with stories and details of experiences by other customers.

Don't select a company or driver that uses worn out equipment, and if it looks worn out it probably is. Successful companies and drivers are not going to use "junk". In order to provide safety and reliability successful carriers pride themselves in top equipment and you will be able to tell the difference.

By contacting brokers when you are requesting quotes, you can be assured that only carriers that meet the above descriptions will be contacting you. Your total satisfaction and safety is really what this is all about.
