Use Stone Veneer To Create Great Curb Appeal

By John Kirzno

Stone veneer is a decorative feature that is manufactured to look very much like natural stone. This artificial stone is then added to many home builders' lists of must have building materials. This unique material is produced similar to the way brick is, by pouring a mixture of lightweight concrete into a mold, but there is no firing necessary as there would be with quality brick. Once the stone is removed from the mold it is colored to approximate the look and feel of real natural stone.

There are many added benefits to using stone veneer rather than placing natural stone or brick to the facade of homes. Those benefits include a reduced cost over that of installing brick or natural stone. In fact, it costs from one third to one half less than the traditional counterparts to artificial stone. Reduced weight is another benefit that is realized from using manufactured stone instead of the alternatives, and that is acquired by the decreased depth of the forms that produce them. Along with those benefits is the wide variety of designs and colors that are created to satisfy the most finicky customer.

Installation of stone veneer is also much simpler, since it is lighter than either brick or natural stone, there is no need to lay down footings to set the veneer on, and ties are also not necessary to hold it in place. Special mortars are used instead of the traditional masonry mortars that are used with natural stone and brick, and all of this eliminates the need to hire a mason to do the job. However, there is nothing wrong with calling in a professional to produce the best finished product. Additionally, there is very little waste when using cultured stone versus that of natural stone and brick.

There are some disadvantages to using manufactured stone, but those are minimal. For one thing, it is not as strong as natural stone or brick due to the nature of the product and the fact that it is thin, unlike stone, if a piece falls out or is taken out, there is no cover or shadow to help camouflage the missing piece. Also, unlike natural stone it is not reusable.

With all the variety that exists with artificial stone, there is just no reason that anyone wishing to choose this building material for their home will not be able to locate something that will be content with. The right color and size, as well as design of the veneer can be specially selected to go with any style of home. When talking about creating something that the neighbors and passersby will be enthralled with, there is nothing that will give better curb appeal other than stone veneer.
