Why You Must Generally Employ An Expert To Fell A Tree

By Jeff DeCleff

Raised from a large, old school Sicilian heritage, I was always nurtured to know that we can do all things.

And I mean everything.

Italians are inherent electricians, plumbers, carpenters and mechanics. When you ask them where they learnt the tricks of their countless trades you may sometimes receive a mumbled, unintelligible answer that goes along the lines of 'ahhh I'm Italian, I learn back in Italy ', followed by a fast change of subject.

Unfortunately for the family, the cars and the household appliances and hardware, the technical training possessed by my family members frequently results in something burning down, something breaking permanently, or more to the point irreversible damage to the car.

It's a Saturday or Sunday arvo at our picturesque European villa on the Central Coast, and for months my Nonno and Godfather had been staring at the forest in the front yard.

Amidst dissent of how it blocks the sunlight from the flower patch, leaves too many branches for my Grandmother to clean up and attracts pesky bugs and birds, they made a decision it was time for the tree to be cut down.

In any other situation perhaps it'd be a job that my Grandfather and Uncles could do. But the incontrovertible fact was, the tree in question was a 10 metre Gumtree, which had been rooted for over 50 years. My Grandmother, Mamma and Papa attempted in vain to dissuade the intrepid tree loppers from undertaking their tree removal mission, however making an attempt to tell an Italian to call in someone else to do the work is admitting weakness, something my family appeared incapable of doing.

So out came the ropes, the manual saws and the gloves. For for what seemed like days they violated that tree, until the point when it was eventually destined to succumb to its death. The wiser of us sat cooked a meal, bracing for anarchy.

The trio got prepared on the side of the tree, making ready to yank the tree away the fence as it fell. What they did not foresee was the wood falling apart before they could even begin. We watched in horror as the tree slid, first smashing the fence, and finally crashing on the roof of my Grandad's much loved Alfa Romeo sedan. I have never heard as many superlatives as I did that morning. Not only did we lose a fence and a car, but we just about lost part of the roof and compromised the wellbeing of our family.

From that day on, my relatives have been a lot more open to calling in the pros to the job, most notably when it comes to tree removal. They have come to learn there are a few things you can't do yourself, and tree removal, pruning and felling are best left to the professionals.

As we saw, tree removal is a extremely difficult task, and can frequently cause stress due to council regulations, safety considerations and green recycling of trees.

Why compromise your safety and spend a few hours worrying when you can get some other person to come in and do the work for you?
