Green Van Driving Tips

By Matt Withers

Why would you want to make your van green? As well as saving the planet, you'll also spend less on fuel, and with today's ridiculous, and ever rising fuel prices, that's more than enough reason for most people. So what can you do?

So change your driving style. It's the easiest and cheapest thing in the world to do, as it doesn't cost extra, and the savings can be big. It's easy too, as it's all about making your driving more even, keeping your speed as constant as possible. The less you use the accelerator, the more fuel you save. The less you use your brakes, the less you have to regain your momentum again, and this can be done so simply. All it takes is giving the traffic ahead of you more room, which in turn gives you more time to take account of things so you can avoid hard acceleration or heavy braking. This also leads to safer driving, making it less likely you'll need to claim on your van insurance.

Change up a gear as soon as you can. In a higher gear the engine turns more slowly, so it automatically uses less fuel, and with engine technology as advanced as it is nowadays, most engines have enough low down power to keep you going without any trouble.

When driving down hill, let gravity do the work. Take your foot off the accelerator. This tells the engine computer to cut all fuel from the engine, so you actually use no fuel at all, which is even better (and safer too) than coasting.

If you're on the open road, try to keep your van moving at it's optimum speed. Most vehicles reach the peak of their fuel efficiency a little before maximum torque in top gear, and this is usually somewhere between 70kph(45mph) and 90kph(55mph). Driving at speeds above this, fuel efficiency tends to drop off quite quickly as air resistance ramps up. Doing 15kph less than the maximum limit on an expressway can bring savings of at least 10%, usually more.

The gears in your vehicle are there for enhanced efficiency as well as enabling quicker acceleration when you need it across a very wide range of road speeds. When driving about in the city, why use and accelerate in every single gear to get to a relatively low speed limit? Change into top gear as soon as is reasonably possible.

How quickly does your van warm up? Engines, ancient and modern, work much more efficiently when warm than when cold. Does that mean you should warm up your engine before moving off? No. Your engine warms up much more quickly when it's under load rather than just idling, that just wastes fuel. With this in mind it makes sense to combine several journeys if possible too, as less fuel is wasted heating the engine before each separate journey.
